This

is part of the medieval thinking that Islamists hold and promote.

Mentally impaired child arrested under Pakistan's anti-blasphemy law

Pakistan really is possibly setting itself up as a pariah in that region of the world, at least to the West. They claim concern about terrorism but let terrorists base themselves in their country. What's that about?

An instance

in which a group is making a major issue out of something that isn't a major issue, and making accusations about things that have already been adequately answered.

This article:

Group calls for exorcism inquiry after Saskatoon incident

followed this one:

Sprinkling Holy Water Not Exorcism, Bishop Says

You'll recognize the group if you see them. They're the ones standing there with their fingers in their ears shrieking loudly "Medieval abuse! Stuck in the middle ages! Science uber alles! These people are luddites! The Catholic Church is evil! There is no God!" and renting bus signs saying the same thing.

You know, the new athiests...

More of the same

Minister criticises Scientology campaign

The cult of Scientology created this 'commission' specifically to target psychology and psychiatry for abusive campaigns and acts that may even be criminal, simply because years ago the medical people in this field refused to accept Hubbard's teachings as the solution for all humankind's problems. It doesn't even solve their own problems. They spend all their time attacking other people and trying to convince people to believe them (For a price. Always for a price.). And so the battle continues to this day...

As long as

they keep him locked up forever no matter what they decide.

Norway massacre: Breivik declared insane

I do have sympathy for the position of the opposition member who thinks that he must have been sane to prepare the attack so well and for so long. Given the death toll, there has to be an element of punishment along with rehabilitation...

A great article

from the London Review of Books:

Diary: Jenny Diski

SWMBO and I both owned copies of the book before we met. We have one at home now. The book, despite its failings, is a classic, and very interesting for many reasons and on lots of levels. And so on.

But I repeat myself...

An example

of the psychotic behaviour of the current leader of Scientology, David Miscavige:

Mike Rinder: The Antithesis of David Miscavige

We can only hope that someday Mr. Miscavige learns the hard way what it's like to be treated like this himself, and what it's like to do time for one's crimes...

It's something we all do to some extent

and some of us, like myself, would end up like the Collyer brothers if we had their resources...

Favourite things

"Is it a noble instinct or a destructive desire? Sally Feldman delves into the pathology of collecting"
It is interesting to read that some believe obsessive collecting (the type I engage in) to be a sympton of a type of autism, perhaps Asperger’s Syndrome. I won't go any further on this, for obvious reasons.

To some a hobby, to some a pathology...

Damned if you do...

Could a Taser have saved two lives in Montreal?

In this instance I really do feel sorry for the police. What are they supposed to do? There has been so much criticism of the use of tasers by police that if they had used one and hurt (or killed) the person there would be no end to the shouting. So they use their guns and there are two deaths. Which would have been best? Hindsight is always 20/20. The fact is that it was a tense situation in which there had to be split second decisions made. It's easy for all of us in our comfortable armchairs to sit back and criticize after the fact.

I'm beginning to think that the only reasonable response from the police is to get back in their cars and drive away from the ongoing incident. They can't possibly win...

A very helpful list

Even for those who are sympathetic to people with mental disorders.

Top 10 Mental Illnesses And Their Myths

Most of the people I talk to seem to have the myths well-established in their minds. A little education is very helpful, and this list does a good job of giving the information necessary to refute some myths...

(The image here is to portray the people who are lacking the proper information, not the people with mental illnesses. Sigh. I get a little frustrated that I have to say that, but if I don't I'll get comments or email from people upset because of their misinterpretation. This is no reflection on any person or persons that I usually communicate with or who comment, of course. You folks are the best!)

When you consider

that the stats show a very low number of suicides, one wonders if he is using the concern over sweatshops and suicide to grab people's attention.

1 Million Workers. 90 Million iPhones. 17 Suicides. Who’s to Blame?

I don't think you can blame your iPhone. There's a lot of factors that go into an issue like this, and it would be too simplistic to say that one thing causes another so readily. However, like articles everywhere, one person makes statements in the first comment on the article that effectively hijacks the discussion on the article into a discussion on his comments. Ah, the intertubes!

and this probably makes me a bad person, I have way more sympathy for the artist/forger than for the institutions he's trying to take donate art to.

A cautionary tale

Our Cluttered Minds

A book review of a book revealing one author's concerns about the effect of the Internet on our brains and our brains' functions. While the reviewer has certain criticisms, it look as though "The Shallows" may be a very good read.

(Perhaps I can buy it online in electronic form and download it over the Internet to my Kindle. - Joke! )
