Nice!

Rocking Russian grannies to build church with prize winnings

It's a truly wonderful use for the prize money, but I'm still trying to picture six grandmothers in 'red smocks, headscarves and woolly boots' singing disco. A mental image I never thought I'd be trying to picture...

On the register

your name could be taken off, or the change noted.

Flood of ‘de-baptisms’ worries European church leaders

But how would the Church go about 'kicking out' the Holy Spirit? Baptism is more than the act of receiving someone in the Church. While you can kick them out of the Church, you can't remove an indelible mark caused by an action of God, even if you don't believe in it.

The churches in Europe just need to decide what to do to prevent lawsuits. Obviously they're not losing any members or money as these people aren't active in the church anyway...

Are they really what they claim to be?

And does it matter?

CathBlog - Magi relics in Cologne Cathedral

Along with many things in the Church, as long as they're not abused and don't become a focus of people's faith, belief in certain things, such as relics, act to deepen believer's faith in God and in God working in this world, something that isn't bad in itself. It falls into error when the objects (apparitions, prophecies, relics, etc.) become the focus of people's faith, and not simply signposts pointing to God...

Church charges for calls to mobile phone-carrying angel

Heh, heh, heh, heh...

(Though I would rather see a gargoyle on a cell phone on the cathedral ramparts rather than an angel.)

Norway massacre: Breivik declared insane

I do have sympathy for the position of the opposition member who thinks that he must have been sane to prepare the attack so well and for so long. Given the death toll, there has to be an element of punishment along with rehabilitation...

Now,

like the U.S., Europe's debt will be owned by China.

Eurozone seeks bailout funds from China
"The head of the eurozone's bailout fund is beginning attempts to persuade China to invest in a scheme to help rescue member countries facing debt crises."
I really think that it's about time the world looks at a different form of 'finance', one that doesn't put one group or country in a position of power over another...

I still believe

that the media is responsible for a great many of our ills.

Vienna cardinal takes tough line on priest revolt
"The head of Vienna's Roman Catholic community ruled out sweeping changes demanded by dissident priests and said there could be "serious conflict" if they defied Church teaching on celibacy or give communion to remarried divorcees."
An Anglican seminarian once quoted me in his thesis after a lengthy and involved conversation we had on the issue of modern communications and the Church. It may be the only thought I've ever had worth quoting as it didn't lead to the rejection of his thesis. In a nutshell (and certainly not worth quoting) instantaneous communications - even as they were in the early 1980s - are in a large part responsible for the current state of affairs in the Catholic Church, I believe. I won't bother going any further than that. My thoughts are never worth quoting anyway (so don't quote me)...

It continues...

Netherlands to ban the burka

"Holland is to become the latest European country to ban the burka, despite the fact that fewer than 100 Dutch women are thought to wear the face-covering Islamic dress."

In some ways this is understandable, particularly from a security perspective. Given the number of people mentioned in the article who actually wear it, they may have felt safe instituting this sort of legislation.

Islam is the author of this misfortune, without a doubt. Of course, they could just pass a law that anyone wearing a burka also had to wear eyeshadow, lash thickener, rouge and other bits of female makeup. That would be fun to see - all those male Muslim terrorists standing for mugshots made up like Mae West!

Does this priest

not have any authority over him?

Controversial Polish priest to build spa and aquapark

This news 'article' is really just one of those 'sound-bite articles' that I really dislike so much. It tells you nothing. What's his history? What church is he a priest in? Roman? Orthodox? Protestant? This is really news for those who can't concentrate for over 20 seconds. 'News' for those with ADD, I guess...

Bizarre...

File-Sharers Denied Official Religion Status in Sweden

In order to try to protect themselves from the law (I suspect)they want to form a religion. Shades of Scientology! But we all know that file sharing is all about goodness, kindness and charity, right? Sure you do.

Essentially

another underground tunnel. There's something about them...

The Wieliczka Salt Mine: Underground city of salt

I saw a program about this mine some years ago. It was fascinating. I really do find the things we do to create 'normalcy' around us intriguing. This salt mine is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here's the Wikipedia article about it...

Why

am I so fascinated by tunnels?

Paris Sewers: Exploring the dark underbelly of the City of Light

The most heart-rending part of the story:

" Bruneseau found a number of interesting artifacts during his explorations, ... to the skeleton of an orangutan that had escaped from a zoo several years previously."
I feel most sad thinking about an intelligent animal that took refuge from humans in the sewers and died there, not understanding where he was and why he had been held prisoner. (I've said before that I relate too well to the animals and not well enough to the humans.)

Belgian government defends raid of bishops’ meeting

This is outrageous!

Vatican 'indignant' over Belgium police raids

"The Vatican has expressed shock at raids, including a "violation" of a cathedral crypt, by Belgian police investigating alleged child sex abuse."
This goes beyond investigation directly toward a deliberate slap in the Vatican's face. Drilling holes in crypts. Good grief!

I wonder what the abuse rate is among Belgian police officers? Probably at least the societal average, but given their positions of authority, most likely even higher. Someone over there is over-reacting for some reason...

It's only because

it's the Catholic Church.

Austrian Catholics ramp up quest for church reform

Some of their concerns and criticisms are valid. They're just tired of the Church taking centuries to make changes. Besides, who wants to be directed by the Holy Spirit? We want what WE want, darn it! :-)

The criticisms over abuse are just because the Church is an actual entity that people can focus on. Even though there are statistically more incidents of abuse in education, you can't just pick the nebulous body of 'education' to focus on. It's easier to point at the Catholic Church because a) it's an actual body with a head and a structure, b) the members are supposed to be holy (?!?), and c) it's the Catholic Church, the focus of the last acceptable prejudice in our society.
