An interesting

and touching story...

Man Plants Guitar Shaped Forest in Memory of His Wife

(Given how much napping I've been doing due to my health all my wife could do would be to plant a forest in the shape of a bed. Or maybe a set of consecutive 'Z's. Thanks for the link SWMBO!)

Now,

this is interesting!

How tiny insects survive the rain

Really! It is interesting. It's an answer to a question I've actually asked myself in the past (in the case of bothersome mosquitoes, coincidentally) hoping that the answer would be slightly different...

All those pretty pictures

of brightly coloured frogs? These are the kind of animal they're taken of...

Poison Dart Frogs: Pretty to look at, but don’t put them in your mouth

Ah-hem. My poem...

'Lovely to look at
Lovely to hold.
But if you put it in your mouth,
Consider yourself dead.
(Or very, very sick.)'

Thank you.

The angel's share...

The Mystery of the Canadian Whiskey Fungus

A fascinating story of mom nature, humans and mystery solving. Wired is a great magazine...

Weird things...

Lake Monsters of Italy and Germany: The serpentine denizens of European waters

Even weirder is the usual response of the humans involved. Without even being threatened they respond with pitchforks and shotguns. Is it any wonder that the human race is in the mess it is in with the environment around it?

Well...

Angry bees swarm crowds at California fair

...can you blame them?

Study: Cell phone radiation contributing to decline of bee population

It's self-preservation...

Perhaps it's time we (that's the 'everyone' we) re-think what we take for granted and decide to live simpler lives? It couldn't hurt. I'm just saying...

One man has started

a worthwhile promotion with today as its focus...

Support a "Day of the Honey Bee"

They're dying in large numbers, and it's likely our fault. They need our help if they're to survive.

Do a search for 'Day of the Honey Bee' to find out more...

A hugely amusing interview...

with a truly major contractor!

Beaver architect chews over his dam work

Great article!

(Here's the news article about the story...)

Good grief!

Airlines lose $1.7 billion, ash blame game begins

I guess what they really want is the ability to decide themselves if they want to take a chance on killing all their passengers or not...

Capitalists. You just gotta love their crazy disconnects...

If this is what happens

when he meditates, he'd better be more careful...

Chopra Blames Own Meditation for Baja Quake

If this had been posted on April 1, I would have understood it.

It's pretty easy to claim things are a result of something you did after the fact. Good grief! Still, his followers will believe him and become even more fervent. I just wonder, if he can do so much by meditating, why doesn't he solve world hunger, etc., etc.. (Oops! That's not the sort of thing these types like being mentioned...)

A modern geoglyph

The Marree Man: Mystery artwork in the desert

The really interesting thing is the reaction of the authorities. It appears that they consider it a desecration of natural habitat and will let it erode back to nature. Just think what we would have if the people who created the ancient geoglyphs had decided that their work was desecration and destruction of natural habitat. We wouldn't have any of the ancient works of art that we see in nature to wonder at and about. We've come a long way, baby...

So much for fighting

Disputed Bay of Bengal island 'vanishes' say scientists

"A tiny island claimed for years by India and Bangladesh in the Bay of Bengal has disappeared beneath the rising seas, scientists in India say."
'Problem solved,' says Mother Nature.

To help the survivors...

Inside Norway's 'Doomsday Vault'

"In a remote mountainside on the Norwegian tundra sits the "doomsday vault," a backup against disaster -- manmade or otherwise. Inside lives the last hope should the unthinkable occur: a global seedbank that could be used to replant the world."
Assuming they can get to Norway, or that survivors are already there, and so on...

It never hurts

to be prepared. Ask any Boy Scout...

Americans stock up to be ready for end of the world

"Recession and the constant threat of terrorist attacks have given new life to the ingrained survivalist instinct"
We have treated both nature and other human beings so cavalierly that it only makes sense to be prepared for bad things to happen - from other people because we deserve it and from nature because we think we're better and stronger than it is. Americans are now living with something that other people have lived with for centuries...

Nature at its most amazing...

Rare self-rolling giant snow balls found in UK

"They may look like winter's answer to crop circles, but these mysterious snow rolls are in fact a rare natural phenomenon usually found only in the world's most remote and frozen regions."

Interesting plant

Tree Tumbo - Mystery plant of the desert

This is a link to a photograph of it:

Welwitschia mirabilis

I really do think that this is a plant I could have some success with. It's beauty is in the fact that it looks pretty much finished when its healthy. Anyway, I'm not known to have the greenest of thumbs...

No one knows why

I thought they knew why, but I guess they don't...

Yawning is part of what makes us human

"Far from being bad manners, yawning is a sign of our deep humanity, says Steve Jones. "
Sure.

It's the week

for personal comments as well as comments on linked articles...

SWMBO took this photo on the way home from work last night. Isn't the sky outstanding? This is an unretouched photo. In the other direction the sky was an marvelous deep blue and pink. Incredible!
