Not just the one man then

but more, in a system created by one man that made it easy for him to commit abuse?

AP Exclusive: Vatican eyes Legion priests on abuse

Have the files on these 7 priests been given to the secular authorities? These weren't just possible crimes against the Church, but against people. Is the Vatican still not aware of the proper way to deal with these things, out and in the open? Can they be so dense?

I don't blame them

Many priests decline appointment as bishops, Vatican prefect discloses

I think it's a position for politicians, bureaucrats or saints.

It doesn't seem like one that most people would choose willingly, other than as a career move for those so motivated, or through obedience...

I still believe

that the media is responsible for a great many of our ills.

Vienna cardinal takes tough line on priest revolt
"The head of Vienna's Roman Catholic community ruled out sweeping changes demanded by dissident priests and said there could be "serious conflict" if they defied Church teaching on celibacy or give communion to remarried divorcees."
An Anglican seminarian once quoted me in his thesis after a lengthy and involved conversation we had on the issue of modern communications and the Church. It may be the only thought I've ever had worth quoting as it didn't lead to the rejection of his thesis. In a nutshell (and certainly not worth quoting) instantaneous communications - even as they were in the early 1980s - are in a large part responsible for the current state of affairs in the Catholic Church, I believe. I won't bother going any further than that. My thoughts are never worth quoting anyway (so don't quote me)...

God bless them

Irish priests reject suggestion that they break seal of confession

The Irish Church has had its share of troubles now too, but I'm glad to see the priests taking their vows and promises seriously.

I still wish someone would start a look into the scandal of sexual abuse by teachers. It would help people realize that there are groups that have been even worse than Catholic priests for percentage of abusers.

Ehhh, how would people sue the disparate school entities, though? It's really all about the money now anyway...

The cult of personality

Elmer Gantry and the Cult of Personality

"As popular "celebrity priests" endure spectacular flameouts, Sinclair Lewis' story gives Catholics much to ponder about our own worldly sensibilities, God and man."
Something that we all have to be aware of. It's not a Catholic thing particularly, it's a human thing...

For the sake of their future

this may well be a good idea...

Legion leadership may step down at next General Chapter

It could be a good idea for no other reason than to clear the air of any perception that a party who may have known about Fr. Maciel is still in some leadership position. It's been pretty clear that the people in leadership in the Legion have been almost destroyed by the discoveries about their founder and are trying to salvage what they can and follow the directives of the Vatican in the process. We need to pray for them...

What an encouraging article!

This is such a nice 'open letter'. God bless them all!

Journalists

who rely on the internet for their sources really need to go back to journalism school.

Richard Cohen Smears Priests

Unless they're now teaching that everything you read on the internet is true, of course. That would take the onus of them for checking their sources...

In these times

influencing someone to become a priest is true sign of sanctity.

Pope John Paul II's Other "Miracles": Interview With Author Randall Meissen

They're not limited to him, though. I can't begin to count how many stories of vocations have included the reference to the example of a holy priest...

A good, and necessary, move

Legion Creates Commission for Maciel's Accusers: Names 2 Members to General Council

I've always been certain that the priest of the Legion would be fine - the fact that their order's founder turned out to be anything but what he portrayed himself as in no way invalidated their vocation, and they could move on in priestly ministry - but I'm most concerned about the lay members, some of whose devotion was so strongly focused on the founder and the order. I hope something comes to take their place for them...

Much as has always been said...

Celibacy does not deny priests their sexuality or freedom, asserts French seminary rector

Other than this, I have nothing to say. Quiet day from me here. It's just the news and opinion pieces...

It's a bomb for the diocese all right...

"The Catholic Church Is The Closet Of Gays", Colombian Priest Writes In His Book

"Out of frustration at episcopal inaction, a priest of the Colombian archdiocese of Cali, has written a book on the ongoing homosexual scandals among priests of the archdiocese. "
...especially the part about all these gay priests fathering children...

The Catholic Church all over the world is going to go through a time of fire, I think...

In the spirit of

their usual 'stick your head in the sand' attitude...

Accused Catholic priests left in legal limbo

First the Church ignored or protected guilty priests when they were accused. Now those who have been accused but are found innocent (or not proven guilty) are being ignored. The Catholic Church just can't get it right. And they expect obedience and love from the people they ignore. No wonder they have a hard time attracting vocations...

Along with the Jews,

the Catholic Church is history's whipping boy...

Anti-Catholicism, Again: The permanent scandal of the Vatican.

I've been active in the Catholic Church all my life, from a young boy as an Altar Boy to an adult as Chair of the Parish Pastoral Council and member of the Diocesan Deanery. I have never been abused by a Catholic priest. Furhter, I might add, I know many, many Catholics, from many, many places the world over, and I have yet to meet one who has been abused by a priest. I'm not saying that they don't exist. I'm just saying that the emphasis is wrong. It's much like the infamous 'burning times'. If the number of women who were killed by authorities as witches during those years are as high as is often claimed, the populaton of Europe would have been decimated...

A good public message

At the ending of 'The Year of the Priest', Cardinal Cláudio Hummes has words for the whole church...

Letter on End of Priestly Year

"Above all we are on the side of the victims and want to support their recovery and their offended rights."
More of the church hierarchy should make statements like that...

It sounds wise

Pope Said to Weigh Takeover of Scandal-Plagued Legion of Christ

"Catholic Church Investigating Powerful Order Wracked by Pedophilia Charges Against Founder Father Maciel"
I think that the Legion would likely accept a 'commissioner'. They seem, despite their old extreme dependence on (and almost veneration of) their former leader, to lean toward supporting the Magesterium of the Church and so would most likely accept the decision of the Pope. It's not likely that the Pope would require them to change their focus and spirituality radically.

I believe it

Expert affirms that happiness is possible while living in celibacy

I've met, and know, many priests and religious who are happy within their celebate lives.

Saturday, April 10, 2010

Fair question

Does Catholic celibacy contribute to child sex abuse?

"With the Roman Catholic Church facing a series of paedophilia scandals, some observers have begun to ask whether the tradition of celibacy in the priesthood has contributed to child abuse. The BBC's Paul Henley raises the question with Catholics in Cologne."
Similarly, does teaching contribute to child sex abuse? Does being a member of the general population contribute to child sex abuse? Seeing as the rate of child sex abuse is the same, or higher, in these areas, as well as others, these, too, are fair questions.

Does the practice of journalism contribute to muck-raking and smear campaigns? Another fair question. Just asking...

I wish

that more people in the Church would say this, backing their statements up with 'facts and figures.'

Sins of priests cannot be applied to entire Church, cardinal says of abuses
