Nice!

Rocking Russian grannies to build church with prize winnings

It's a truly wonderful use for the prize money, but I'm still trying to picture six grandmothers in 'red smocks, headscarves and woolly boots' singing disco. A mental image I never thought I'd be trying to picture...

Nice

Now if Russia wasn't run by the Russian Mafia everything would be great.

New Russian Submarine named after Russian Saint

(Of course, the West is run by the Corporate Mafia, so what's the difference, really?)

I'm not in favour

of book banning or burning...

Russian court bans Scientology books

I do believe in educating the public about harmful groups like Scientology, however, and holding these groups responsible for their actions...

Time compresses

As one gets older, time seems to compress to where what happened decades ago seems like just a few years ago. Take the

Chernobyl nuclear disaster,

for instance. It occured on this date in 1986, but it seems like just a few years ago, not 25 years ago.

I heard a news report on this just today. Official reports still only list around 4,500 people dead as a result of the disaster. Mind you, they don't quote the scientific and medical authorities who say that they expect the actual number to to in the millions due to cancers that would not normally have occured in the population. Some have already occured, some people are still suffering from cancers and some still have to develop the illnesses. The politicians are just starting the whitewashing early, I guess. Besides, you wouldn't want to hurt the nuclear industry, there's too much money in it.

Close

but not quite.

Ice-cold water washes in Russia’s Epiphany

Jesus wasn't "baptized into the Christian faith in the river Jordan." He was baptized in the river Jordan, true, but there wasn't a Christian faith at the time.

Still, I have to hand it to those courageous Orthodox Christians. It's not likely that I'd be tempted into an icy plunge like that...

The new image for women

Russian Church official urges 'national dress code'

"A controversial Russian Orthodox Church official has rebuked Russians for wearing skimpy clothes and proposed a "national dress code". "
I disagree with the idea of a dress code, but I do wonder about fashion, and I am sometimes confused about what kind of respect some of these people think they're displaying when they come to church dressed in this manner. It's become the fashion, though, to the point where Grade 8 students are showing cleavage in school and the normal dress for female office workers has come to be what one person has described as the 'corporate slut' look. Blame film and fashion...

"We are not amused..."

Who knows with aliens, though?

Out of this world: Russian region leader's alien abduction story shakes officials

And what they're worried about is:

"whether he let slip any state secrets"
I'd say that if they have the technology to fly across galaxies and pick up humans to fly around and show the sights, that they also would likely have the technology to discover any 'state secrets' without trying to find a source of information among the earthlings. But that's just me. Maybe I'm overestimating their abilities. Maybe these are 'the trailer park boys' of the alien civilization...

They're having their problems

Russia bans texts by Scientology founder

I wonder when they'll get caught breaking into Russian government offices?

Obama to tell Putin: Time to move past Cold War

They won't be knocking

on Russian doors, I guess...

Russia blocks Jehovah's Witnesses

"Russian president Medvedev is involving chuches on behalf of young people. The Kremlin wants to reinforce relations with the Orthodox, and make the Patriarch of Moscow a point of reference for all religions."
I guess it's pretty obvious what the State religion is, even if it wasn't completely clear before...
