He certainly

lets his feelings be known.

Pathetic student protests should target the education system

But, he also has some very valid points. I just don't think he has much time for what he probably considers spoiled young people. That'd be my guess...

I reiterate...

...how to win friends and influence people.
(That is, if the authorities are correct in who they believe in responsible - student protestors.)

Smoke bombs shut down Montreal's metro system

I think it's not the main group of student activists responsible but the fringe group that is always involved in these sort of protests - the anarchists, revolutionaries, etc., who always take advantage of a protest to stuff their radical acts in with the rest, probably hoping to achieve their ends on the backs of those who are peacefully protesting. I haven't much use for them myself. I feel more strongly called to the peaceful path rather than the path of violence and chaos...

Flood of ‘de-baptisms’ worries European church leaders

But how would the Church go about 'kicking out' the Holy Spirit? Baptism is more than the act of receiving someone in the Church. While you can kick them out of the Church, you can't remove an indelible mark caused by an action of God, even if you don't believe in it.

The churches in Europe just need to decide what to do to prevent lawsuits. Obviously they're not losing any members or money as these people aren't active in the church anyway...

Occupy Wall Street

but NOT in my back yard!

What would Jesus occupy?

A short (13 photos), but very good slideshow accompanied by appropriate text, that shows the timeline...

While some people consider the 'Occupy' movement a failure, I think it got some people thinking, and involved, who would not have been involved normally. It's too bad that, like so many protest movements, it was so scattered and broad in its focus. Along with the 'tax the rich' people there were the usual 'free the gay baby whales' people and everything else. It just makes too many people desire not to participate... (that and laziness and lack of concern, and too much concern for the status quo, and fear, and...)

While I agree, to an extent,

that the 'Occupy' protests point toward a utopian goal and consequently are striving for an impossible objective, does that mean that the goal shouldn't be strived for? If, for most of us, sainthood is impossible, should we stop striving toward it?

Christians Divided on Support for Occupy Movement

Why am I not surprised that people start throwing out the 'leftist' epithet every time someone protests about greed and unfairness? Anytime you attack the American Dream and free enterprise and strive for justice and equality you're a leftist or socialist...

So,

when you become a right-wing commmentator on an insanely conservative television network, do you really get to re-create words and objects to be different things than what they are?

Megyn Kelly Calls Pepper Spray a ‘Food Product, Essentially’

So they weren't really trying to hurt those non-violent protestors, they were treating them to complimentary condiments. That's it! That's the ticket!

What it is like

for one person in the 'Occupy Wall Street' protest in New York...

Mic Checked

I'm excited about this movement. It's not going to amount to much, this time, but it's the first time since the Viet Nam War protests that so many people have gotten worked up about one particular issue. This time it's all about how Orwell's 1984 is really coming to pass. And people aren't happy about it...

On this date

in 1969, the

The Chicago Seven Conspiracy Trial

This was the trial was of eight anti-war activists who were charged with the responsibility for the "violent demonstrations at the August 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago."

Ah, my... *sigh*

Westboro to picket Cowboys-Jets game

They'll picket anything, but now that they're going to take on a major sport in the U.S. we'll see if they get any more notice than before. Sadly, if nothing else there's a greater chance for violence there, given the use of alcohol, etc. Ehhh, they probably won't show...

This will be a series to read

The Top 25 People Crippling Scientology, No. 24: David Touretzky

I've had some communications with Dr. Touretzky on a newsgroup and on Internet Relay Chat, and I have to say that he's a very intelligent, committed individual who really is concerned about people and free speech.

(The first article in this series, The Top 25 People Crippling Scientology: #25: Xenu, Galactic Overlord, will explain to you who the picture is of that I use when I post a Scientology article (see left). Really!)

An important article (well, maybe)...

Important if only because it is an article in on a liberal (some would say left-leaning) website...

8 Reasons Young Americans Don't Fight Back: How the US Crushed Youth Resistance

"The ruling elite has created social institutions that have subdued young Americans and broken their spirit of resistance."
...that is being quoted on conservative (some would say right-leaning) websites.

If the conspiracy-minded conservatives think that the conspiracy-minded liberals are saying something important, well, darn it, it must be!

Another reason

to pity the rich.

On this day in 1863, the

New York Draft Riots

began.

The riots started because the rich folks (poor people that they are) had to spend $300 for the ability to be excluded from the Civil War draft. Poor folk had the privilege of fighting and, in a lot of cases, dying horribly, for the North. For some reason the poor folk objected to this. As usual, the people who suffered were not just the poor folk, but the people affected most by one of the reasons for the Civil War. Black people were 'murdered in the streets'.

Things aren't much different today, really...

I just haven't found time

to finish reading this article from The Atlantic, but what I have read has been good.

The Madness of Cesar Chavez

"Cesar Chavez’s story shows that saints should be judged guilty until proven innocent."
Perhaps posting it will help me find the time to finish it. Being old enough to have boycotted grapes for his cause helps make it interesting...

This is what I mean

Page’s protest rings hollow – but there’s plenty wrong with Parliament

"...I couldn’t help but feel that celebrating DePape’s actions would mean simultaneously celebrating a certain disrespect for Parliament."
This idea is just plain silly. If anyone has watched the House in action decorum and respect are not the first things that come to mind. Mr. Harper himself has shown an incredible disrespect for the democratic political process by proroguing parliament when it suited his political ends. No, this young page took the only route available to her that would allow her maximum coverage, and which would shock Canadians - and that was probably part of her intent. She could have stood outside parliament with the same sign and no one would ever have heard of her. This had an impact, and a peaceful one. Good on her!

Oh. He's selling his book. I get it.
