Another reason


to pity the rich.

On this day in 1863, the

New York Draft Riots

began.

The riots started because the rich folks (poor people that they are) had to spend $300 for the ability to be excluded from the Civil War draft. Poor folk had the privilege of fighting and, in a lot of cases, dying horribly, for the North. For some reason the poor folk objected to this. As usual, the people who suffered were not just the poor folk, but the people affected most by one of the reasons for the Civil War. Black people were 'murdered in the streets'.

Things aren't much different today, really...
