At least someone is thinking of them

Nuns Denounce Human Trafficking Ahead Of Super Bowl XLVI

All everyone else will be thinking about is money, sports and entertainment. Oh, and themselves. But that goes without question.

Some time ago someone was asking me who I thought would be in, and win, the Super Bowl. I thought, Ultimately? I guess God wins. Because these things are just small, small things in the grand scheme, and we are just tiny creatures full of our own self-importance and wanting everything for ourselves...

Everyone is looking for something

Tim Tebow and the Second Coming

Americans seem more likely to make a completely unsubstantiated leap of faith than most people and they're searching just as hard an anyone. They admire strong, husky manly men, and this one honours God, consequently he may very well be God!

I know the work of two of the three scholars they contacted for the article. I'd trust them more than anyone else to be accurate in their appraisal...

Good grief! I'm off to Bedlam!

Awww, this is so nice

Texas nun keeps faith in Rangers, baseball

I'm not into sports myself, but this is a nice, little, slice-o'-life interview. God bless them...

Ah, my... *sigh*

Westboro to picket Cowboys-Jets game

They'll picket anything, but now that they're going to take on a major sport in the U.S. we'll see if they get any more notice than before. Sadly, if nothing else there's a greater chance for violence there, given the use of alcohol, etc. Ehhh, they probably won't show...

Please

Russian plane crash puts Canadiens, hockey world in shock

Take a moment and say a prayer for these players and their families and friends.

(I have only two criticisms - while a horrible tragedy, how is this more of a tragedy than the innocent people who are killed every day in Afghanistan, Uganda and all those other hotspots in the world, or the poor people starving in the Horn of Africa?

Secondly, I listened to a sportscaster being interviewed yesterday who said two controversial things. One that Sidney Crosby should have picked a different day for his press conference about not coming back to hockey until he had recovered 100% from his head injuries and calling for a ban on head shots in hockey. What better time could there be? The sports commentator also commented on the plane tragedy to say that it wouldn't happen here, that kind of thing could only happen in Russia. As if we never have air tragedies?

What a fool!)

Too much wiggle

I admire the writer for writing about the Super Bowl.

The Super Bowl: Super Awesome or Super Idol?

But I'm a little disappointed in the wishy-washy determination he made.

An interesting article

that doesn't dwell much on specifics, and looks more at the Rapture and the Tiger in equal measure.

Tiger, Tiger, Burning Bright: The end of the world and Tiger Woods.

Interesting...

A sports celebrity shows

how important his faith is...

Show of faith earns praise for Wayne Rooney

Public displays of one's faith are rare, and by celebrities, even rarer. How wonderful!

You know, in overly busy, busy world,

I find myself agreeing with him...

Six Nations: 'Rugby is not what fuels my happiness,' says Euan Murray

"Scotland prop Euan Murray on why he refuses to play on Sundays and will not watch their first match"
(And yes, I know that's a football and not a rugby ball. I'm not going to put every piece of sport equipment up to generally represent 'sport'. Sorry.)

On this date...

...in 1983, Jim Thorpe's medals were returned to him.

Jim Thorpe

Posthumously, of course, as he had been dead for 30 years by this time.

In the days of the better athletes, he had been stripped of his Olympic medals because it had been found that he had played on a minor league baseball team at one time prior to his participation in the 1912 Olympics. Now, in the time of obscenely-paid media stars, there are whole teams that are made up of professional athletes. The participants can jump back forth between amateur and professional, and even pose for Playboy<tm> and nothing happens to them.

The Olympic Games have become a farce...

I've always been interested

in the sport of 'free-running'...

Parkour: Turning a city into an obstacle course

I think it's the idea of being able to run in an urban environment and let few things remain as obstacles. However, I'd never have the health or stamina for it now.

I wouldn't have the stamina for THIS either, but I think I'd enjoy it even more...

I saw this yesterday

I really can't believe this.

Frustrated fans vent online

"Social media sites allow Rider followers to share support, anger"

This makes it sound like it's a therapy group for those angry people who need to get themselves under control.

When you think about it, I suppose it is. I mean, they're not living in the real world if they let something like a sports game get them that angry in the first place, so why not have a cyber-support group too?

I don't swear much, but when I read this I really just want to say "It's just a @#%^@&*$^@ game people! Get upset about people starving to death and freezing in your own cities! Get over yourselves!"

Bah!

A sad day

Sunday was a sad day for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. Competing for the Grey Cup, they experienced a tragic last-minute loss. (Well, as tragic as a sports loss can ever be. It's not someone's life, for instance.)

The Saskatoon Star Phoenix published this photo on the front page of their newspaper:

A poignant moment.

Something caught my interest:

Here it is again, a little larger:

Sorry, I can't blow it up any larger and allow you can make it out.

Somehow, and this is just an observation, I don't find it at all unusual for a company that manufactures Celebrex to sponsor athletes. Rona I'm not too sure of, but Celebrex is the most appropriate example of sponsorship I've ever seen. It's just a perfect sponsor for a violent, physical sport competition. I'm sure they're aware of it and no irony is lost on them...

Just an observation...

Every year

around Super Bowl Sunday, this question is asked by someone in the media...

Does God care who wins the Super Bowl?

"Many stars carry their faith with them to the field, and controversy follows"
I think God cares more that people are ignoring their faith and their faith in God in order to worship at the altar of athletics. Just what God do these people follow? Why do people become so obsessed with it?
