Private member’s motion could re-open abortion debate

President-for-Lif...er.. Prime Minister Harper has already stated that he will not allow the abortion debate to be reopened. A back-bencher can table any motion they want, but if the government doesn't want to allow debate it won't happen. And if a back-bencher gets über-control freak Harper upset at them they'll find themselves out on the bread lines next election...

(And so much for the 'pro-life' conservative government, no? Actually stating that he wouldn't allow the debate to re-open. You'd think that this would tell the single-issue voters something, but I guess hope springs eternal. Wake up, folks, individuals may side with you but the Conservative Party is only using you!)

This is old news, but...

...in the wake of a bit of a scandal due to a statement from a Conservative candidate at a rally, a Harper spokesperson is quoted as having said:

"Soudas also says the Harper government has no plans to re-open the debate on abortion." - The Canadian Press

And in an interview with Peter Mansbridge, Harper said something to the effect that he's spent his whole time in office avoiding the abortion issue.

Now, there's the distinct possibility that the Conservatives feel that they can dismantle access to abortion by denying funding and destroying the health care system, because that just fits into their ideological plans anyway. Not to mention trying to do things behind the backs of the people and the other parties, in a very underhanded manner. They seem to have no plans to do the will of the people, only plans to do what they want however they can get it. I haven't seen such a dishonest political party since, well, since the Conservatives were in power in Saskatchewan in the 1980s. A whole bunch of them were convicted of criminal behaviour, it turned out. Anyway, I digress...

I just thought this was a good quote to point out to all the single issue voters out there who think that the wonderful pro-life Conservatives are going to re-establish a Canada without abortion. They don't plan on opening the debate. Remember that. If you think that ignoring democracy to get their way is fine, remember that when they do the same thing to something you hold dear.

I would just like to point out that one of the reasons this conservative government was elected was because they convinced voters that they were 'pro-life'. All the pundits said that nothing would change because no politician will endanger their seat by taking on this issue, but do the people listen? No. So easily taken in. And it'll happen again next time, too...

Politicians, while giving one side or the other lip service, won't do anything to upset the status quo because of the political ramifications. What they really want to do is get elected, then re-elected. Touching abortion laws is almost an automatic defeat...

This is from conservative politicians - those politicians that the Pro-Life movement look to and promote as the answer to the scourge of abortion. The thing that single-issue voters should remember is that every conservative majority - American and Canadian - has had a chance to repeal abortion laws and declare it illegal - and they haven't! It's all about getting elected. That's all they care about, and they're never going to do anything that will alienate a portion of their voters.

(A friend of mine and I often spoke about how little respect we have for the electorate. My opinion hasn't changed...)

Concerned Roman Catholics Call on Knights of Columbus to Expel Pro-Abortion Politicians

On a local level a lot of Knights have done wonderful things for the Pro-Life movement. To lump them all together and slam them this way is uncharitable to say the least. They want the Knights in all areas to become angry fringe critics like themselves that people see as bitter and angry and who truly do nothing other than rant and rail and polarize people on issues. This kind of language "...pro-abortion and pro-sodomite..." shows just how bitter, angry and 'fringe' they are. Their God is the Old Testament God, smiting sinners, rather than the New Testament God who tries to draw them to himself...

(Sorry for judging, but these people get me a bit riled up. No one is holy enough for them. They're more Catholic than the Pope...)

Trials of a Catholic "Obamacon"

Why, if conservative politicians are so pro-life, and as they have held power in the U.S. and Canada and other countries for some time now, do none of them change the laws around abortion and the like?

That's the question. The easy answer is that it's a political hot potato and none of them are going to alienate a large number of their possible supporters by doing anything about it. It would be political suicide. Don't expect too much change, no matter what they say. The only reason the Catholic conservatives can receive Communion in the Catholic Church is that they spout the right (wing) line and say they support the proper position, not because they really can or will do anything to change the situation. It's all politics. And it's hypocritical as well.

Chinese Chastisement? And what of Europe and America?

This is not unlike saying that God caused the devastation in New Orleans because of their 'wicked lifestyles'. Which begs the question of why God would do that to evil and good alike, as I'm sure there are good people there. Will God spare the people even if there is one good person there? I think so.

As much as I hate the actions of the Chinese Government in these things, the callousness and self-righteousness of these 'Christians' is just as disgusting. Don't you love the use of 'some say' in order for them to imply that '...it's not us saying it, gosh no, but how astute of someone to think of this...'
