Believe it or not

today is, apparently,

National Hug Your Cat Day!

Seeing as cats don't read greeting cards and really don't give a meow about presents (unless it's food) it seems that the health side surrounding it might be the most logical source of the celebration (and not business interests as is usual).

Hug your cat(s)! You know you want to!

(Besides your cat, hugging your dog is supposed to be just as good. Not to take anything away from cats, but there's probably even more 'pet' animals that could be included. Why don't they have as effective a lobby as cats (other than dogs - there are a lot of dog related holidays)? Just hug your pets, period. Other than porcupines, I guess. But you shouldn't be keeping them as pets anyway - they're wild animals. Still, hugging any pet will probably do just as much good.)

Most things like this

have their origins lost in time.

Cleansing evil spirits at El Colacho baby-jumping festival

"El Colacho is a vibrant, albeit Pope-worrying festival in Castrillo de Murcia in north-west Spain, the culmination of 96 hours celebration following the feast of Corpus Christi."
Though I'm really not sure at all how this could have come about...

There's no documentation, but the comments about the Church and Pope Benedict XVI are interesting.

Oh, yes...

...something else was pointed out to me. My friend Glen, who I sent an email wishing him the best on his birthday today, also reminded me that it is

Geek Pride Day

Of course it is. What better day to celebrate Geek Pride than on Towel Day?

Wikipedia describes it as "A non-denominational holiday to be celebrated by nerds and geeks who do not feel ashamed of showing their unconventional interests in public."

We wear our pocket protectors with pride!

Happy Geek Pride Day everyone!

Today is

Towel Day!

Don't Panic! I've got mine, so I'm ready. Are you?

Happy

International Worker's Day

to all my left-leaning friends. You know who you are. God bless you all!

(I used this worker image intentionally. He doesn't look too happy, does he? Perhaps he knows where the power really lies in the workplace, in business, in production and support. It isn't with the workers, alas. Even after all this time and effort. We're not part of the top percentage that controls everything. Happy celebration...)

Saint Patrick's Confessio: Read what St. Patrick actually wrote in his own words

And happy St. Patrick's day to all my Irish relatives, friends and everyone Irish!

Today

in Canada, we're celebrating

Labour Day.

We've celebrated it on the first Monday in September since the 1880s, but it's beginning to mean less and less. Today, many stores and shops are still open on Labour Day, with business dictating what the day will be and only those employers who really care about their workers, or unionized workplaces, really celebrate the holiday. It's a very sad testament to what is happening in the working world...

There are so many arguments

on both sides of this issue...

Catholic Clergy Protest Pope’s Visit, and Its Price Tag

"The priests, along with dozens of left-leaning groups demanding a secular state and young people who occupied many of Spain’s main squares for months to protest the government’s handling of the economy, are planning at least one major protest march on Wednesday. "

The most important thing I would remind the clergy about is what usually happens when a secular state comes about, right OR left. History, even in Spain, proves it out. Clergy die. The secular states that come about due to 'revolution' of one sort or another are not friends of the Church or it's members and representatives.

Having said that and speaking as a Franciscan, yes, despite the effect on young people, the price tag is scandalous!

Mind you, far more money is taken in at movie theatres across the country in one weekend when a new movie is released...

Breaking from my usual habit

here's another post for Sunday.

Happy May Day!

or, as it is also known,

International Workers' Day!

I won't blog tomorrow

but don't forget that tomorrow, Good Friday, is also

Earth Day.

Good Friday outweighs the Earth Day in my life, but it isn't a bad thing to remember Earth Day everyday, and live like it means something...

A good

article on Passover by a (female) Rabbi.

Passover Themes

Followed by comments of appreciation, and one comment from someone named 'Muslim' criticising a woman being in the role of Rabbi, etc., etc..

It's always someone.

Thursday, March 17, 2011

Oh, yes...

I almost forgot...

Happy
Saint Patrick's Day!

Sorry, SWMBO!

(Take a look at the link to see a photo of the Chicago River that is dyed green each year in honour of St. Patrick's Day. Humans are nothing if not immoderate...)

So. Have you ever wondered

what the deal is with 'Burning Man'? Me neither. But you can read this article from Killing the Buddha to find out a little bit of where it came from and what it is...

Castles Made of Sand

"Some pointed questions about Burning Man for Steven T. Jones."

Personally,

I don't celebrate Hallowe'... er,

Valentine's Day.

(I get Hallowe'en and Valentine's Day mixed up. They're both scary.)

It's too much of a manufactured celebration for the benefit of the greeting card companies...
