They were certainly unfairly treated in the film, partly because of some more archaic Catholic practices that grabbed the media's attention. This was quite unfair. Any kind of more extreme use of discipline to try to 'mortify the flesh' (particularly when poorly and even incorrectly understood by the media who were misled by the statements of 'complete truth' by Mr. Brown) seems abhorrent to contemporary culture. Having said that, however, I find myself personally shying away from any kind of extreme right or extreme left in issues of faith. I've experienced both. I think that may be what led me to become a Franciscan...
