Such a horrible tragedy!

Man decapitates passenger aboard Greyhound bus in Manitoba: witness

This is the kind of thing that can happen anywhere, anytime. There's no way to prepare for it, and no way, other than taking action at the time, to possibly prevent it. The government will try to prevent it, though. Probably by prohibiting knives. I wonder how they'll keep people from using kitchen knives? Ah, well...

Lord, have mercy on everyone involved. Be peace and consolation to the families...

I have been following the comments about this story over on the cbc news site. For the most part, they express horror at the act, sympathy for the family of a young man whose life ended in such a way.

Of course, there are the usual gawkers:

One person from India who called every one on the bus cowards for not rushing the attacker, and perhaps saving the young man's life. He also stated that such a thing would never happen in India.

(my obs: Yes, indeed, perhaps it would never happen in India, but weren't 40 people killed in recent religious rioting? Since my chances of being killed by a knife wielding maniac are roughly about the same as my winning a major lottery, I will take my chances in Canada)

Then a few from our neighbours to the south:

"This is another reason why Canada should have the death penalty!"

My obs: And what good would that have done? The victim would still be dead, and killed by a man who had no criminal record and as far as I know, never been a psychiatric patient. The death penalty would not have deterred him in the least. Plus, given the number of murder convictions that have been overturned of late (which means that the guilty party is still out there, having literally gotten away with murder) I think that things are pretty similar in the states. The only difference being that it is rather futile to overturn the conviction of someone who is already dead.

Then there is the inevitable:
If only one person on the bus had a gun, this would not have happened.

my obs: Yup, that's just what we need: instead of one maniac with a knife we can have a maniac with a gun, a far more efficient way of killing people. You and 20 other people can be dead before you even get your gun out. Very efficient.

I am glad I live in a country where people are not so afraid of each other.

Ah, Polaris, your thoughts couldn't be closer to my own. I was just reading an article on the Beeb website which reported about a temple 'stampede' in India, not even a riot, that killed over 140 people, mostly women and children. And I'd really hate to be on a packed bus with an untested firearm carrier while people were panicking and trying to get off the bus. Chances are he might kill the attacker but there'd probably be some 'collateral damage' too. Not a nice thought.

Yes, Canada is by far a safer place to be.

oh.. and i forgot the last:

"The Death Penalty would make the family feel better"

my obs: Somehow, i doubt that. It won't bring their loved one back.
