Top Vatican official condemns Saddam's death penalty
Sadly, all the Catholic hawks will be using all the casuistry at their command to dissent from the Pope's position on this. Personally, I believe Saddam did commit crimes and should be punished but I also believe that no one has the right to play God in taking away his life. I wonder why there wasn't the same outcry by the political right over some other dictators who commited crimes/atrocities then, like the following ones who were trained at the center formally known as the 'School of the Americas':

Leave us not forget others such as the late Auguste Pinochet, and the Shah of Iran among that merry band. I agree that Saddam Hussain is guilty of many monsterous crimes. Unfortunately, I also feel that he was tried in what well could be described as a "kangaroo court". I feel that executing Saddam Hussain would be a grave error. Morality aside, it would make a martyr out of him and the consequences of that would be horrible indeed.
