Man who shot black Florida teen fears for safety, supporters say

As much as there is the knee-jerk reaction of racism by those who respond this way usually and as they would would like to paint it, it is getting harder to find your defined group to pin the charge on. A Hispanic shooting a Black is racism? Possibly, but where's the stereotypical white guy racist? It's a much more confused thing to claim when both groups often claim racism. I suppose that anyone can be racist, but the Hispanics could get just as upset.

No, this was a terrible case of someone with a firearm, with the ability to carry it and use it, using it in a situation where bravado, courage and machismo failed. He never should have been there, never should have followed the young man and should have just let the police do their job. In this case it's the firearms laws, I think...

It's still a horrible tragedy for both parties, the family of the person killed, and the person who killed him, who I really believe is going through a terrible time right now. They both need our prayers, and we need to keep a sane thought in our heads about what happened...

It had to happen

Hornady, a manufacturer of firearm ammunition, is riding the wave of the zombie craze with their new Zombie Max ammunition in various calibres, "just in case".

As someone who has always been interested in the zombie genre (along with vampires, werewolves and mummies - the traditional horror genres) even before the current zombie craze took hold, I have to laugh and be amused at this, and the various commercials for them (check YouTube to see them). (Serious adult hat on) As a person interested in shooting, and a responsible member of the public, I do think that making these things seem real, even in a tongue-in-cheek manner, isn't a great idea. There are too many people out in The Real World (TRW) who are too easily influenced by social memes, and too many, shall we say 'close to the edge' people who are just looking for some sign of the impending collapse of society, and others who already truly believe in zombies, that this may send them over the edge. I know, it's a tempest in a teapot really and I shouldn't be taking it seriously, but if even one innocent person gets hurt it's one person too many. And the serious-minded anti-gun folk are always looking for another reason to hate guns and want them banned.(Serious adult hat off)

But it's still quite funny, really...

As a fan

of the recreational use of guns, target shooting and shooting in general, part of me gets excited by something like this.

Shoot: An exercise in recreational destruction.

Then, after thinking about it for a minute, I wonder what on earth they were doing, and what good it served. My supposed knee-jerk lefty response takes a few moments to surface when I'm confronted with a childhood dream of shooting the sh*t out of inanimate objects.

Then I'm better again. *Whew!*

It makes sense

to protest outside gun shops, if the guns are being passed on to people who aren't supposed to have them. That, in itself, is a serious crime I suspect...

Pastors and Guns

Canada has fair laws (though I might argue against the long gun registry, seeing as how it is a huge waste of money and a sop to the anti-gun crowd with no real proof of success) but our laws on handguns have been strict all along, and I think things could be better in the U.S. if they had reasonable laws as well. But, what can you do in the wild West?

I have to ask why (though it happens in other countries as well, just not to the same extent) America has such a high level of violent crime. Is there something inherent in their politics or social make-up that makes protecting one's self more of a necessity there than in other countries? Just wondering...

This sad story suggests the culture of heated opinion which the internet fosters and lack of reasonable gun control is a dangerous combination. May you rest in peace now Mr. Bedell - in a better world you might have had supportive access to mental health care before becoming a danger to yourself and others.

Registry: Bureaucracy gone bad?

While I hope they get rid of the long gun registry, and now I'm being off-topic, but I still wish some people in government would begin to seriously look at the health care system and Roy Romanow's suggestions for it. If people think that the Long Gun Registry is a good example of bad bureacracy, let them take a look at our health region. There's a terrific example of a bureacracy existing to feed itself, to the detriment of the users...
