Somehow,

it's not right to put today's attitude toward sexual abuse and the belief as to whether or not it can be successfully treated back into 1980's history...

Pope knew priest was paedophile but allowed him to continue with ministry

People (mostly Americans) have been trying for years to connect the Vatican to the whole abuse issue, however tenuously, and I suspect it's for two reasons: 1. to discredit the Catholic Church as much as possible (possibly due to anger at the Church, possibly due to the whole fringe Protestant 'Whore of Babylon' idea of the Catholic Church), and 2. to open the Catholic Church as a body to the possibility of lawsuits to try to get at what they see as the huge Vatican purse. More often than not it's all about the money...
