But then bigotry and prejudice against Catholics and the Catholic Church really is the last acceptable prejudice. Everyone seems to engage in it with impunity.

The same sort of incidents that occur against Christians, particularly Catholics, would be considered hate crimes if they were perpetrated against Jews or, perish the thought, Muslims. (People would be crazy to commit them against Muslims. It would mean the end of their life.)
