Hoyt Axton (from Wikipedia)
In listening to music throughout my life I feel that there have been some natural, and very, very gifted songwriters. People like Kris Kristofferson and John Prine come to mind immediately, but I also followed the career and music of Hoyt Axton as well, and would class him in the same group. He was really special as his voice was generally a bass/baritone, which is my range, and his music was written, most often, to be sung in that range, which is really rare. Generally, if you're not a tenor you don't have music written for you. Anyway, I've met some of these songwriter/singers, like Prine and Axton. Hoyt Axton is one of the nicest performers I've met. I still have the autographed double album he gave me when we met and chatted for a while many years ago. This was years and years ago, but I can't believe how quickly time goes by. 10 years! It seems like a couple of short years ago that the world lost this man with a very talented pen and big, big voice. I still listen to, and play, his music. There could have been so much more...

Hoyt was simply one amoung the best ever. Unfortunately true talent is now lost in the glitter of todays mostly empty, hollow music.

Very true, Mike. It seems like the really talented people have to fight and fight to get even a small bit of recognition while the glitz and glamour attract the most attention. You're correct about the empty, hollow music. I miss being able to expect to hear new Hoyt Axton music. He was terrific.
