One thing is true

even if they have other motives for fencing off archaeological finds that are Christian or Jewish (and I suspect that there are) the ostensible reason, that of their protection, is certainly true.

Digging up the Saudi past: some would rather not

Alas, it seems that Muslims tend to riot and destroy things at a word from their religious leaders. As so many of them would then seem to be violent fanatics, the religious archaeological discoveries wouldn't last long before they would be destroyed by crowds...

(I'm not saying that all Muslims would want to destroy these, just that enough of the violent ones would want to do so, and who could stand in their way?)
