Localism (but not isolationism)
After the Disaster: Back to the Family and Localism
"Today’s real radicals are not socialists who believe in big government stepping in to control everything in their name. Nor are they capitalists who still believe that economic competition alone, unregulated, will work in the interest of the common good. The real radicals want to turn everything upside down and base it around the family and the local community – on cooperation rather than competition, with government merely protecting the conditions under which small community can flourish. Socialism is about who owns "the means of production". It's about who controls property and power. And contrary to the propaganda machine - which is where this guy must be getting his political philosophy - the socialist position isn't, "the government should own everything."
On the other hand, this guy - on a quick read - seems to think you can ignore the question of power. You can't. You can't create a co-operative and just society when ultimate power (political and economic) is held by people committed to competition, capitalism, and relentless self-interest. In other words, you can't ignore the question of "who rules".
Ah, well. Sorry for the rant....
I apologize for my comment. I get fed up with some of the stuff people put out but maybe I should try to be pleased that he's at least questioning some things and "thinking differently". I tend to forget what a breakthrough this kind of thing is for people in certain countries ;-)
And now it's published that nickname I used for political purposes. I hate google's intrusiveness.
Nothing is safe on the 'net. Now everyone knows that 'Anonymous' is also 'webcomrade'. :-)
(I appreciate your comments very much. SWMBO is the intelligent debater in our family. I'm just a reporter with a very mediocre mind...)
