I'd make a bad historian

Rather than wondering, so often, why we don't have an historical record of such-and-such, I'm more often surprised when we do find some sort of record or proof. It's a big world, there are various amounts of record-keeping, and things are often lost to history by flood or fire or war or other disaster. That we know so much about the medieval period, for instance, seems to me to be more luck than anything else, despite the best intentions of those who keep the records...
