A Secular Franciscan looks at the world...

An article

on the Carmelite Brown Scapular...

The Virgin Mary's sacrament: the Scapular

"Wearing the Scapular is an ancient tradition, conferring graces upon those who bear it."
I was attracted to this headline by the use of the word 'sacrament' in it. It's not necessarily a good word to use to a Catholic audience to which the word 'sacrament' means something particular.

This website, Confraternity of the Brown Scapular, goes a good way to dispel the pious sentimentality of the first. It's most important statement is:

"The Scapular is not a magical charm for protection or an automatic guarantee of salvation. It is a sign of Christian faith & commitment."
Amen!
