Why is it

that all these 'utopian' schemes always end up as nightmares, founded and forged by madmen, pedophiles, psychopaths and con men? And always in the name or religion of one sort or another. We always find this out at their end, or because of some tragedy...

The Torture Colony

"In a remote part of Chile, an evil German evangelist built a utopia whose members helped the Pinochet regime perform its foulest deeds"
This sounds like such a nightmare...

Awful, isn't it? A genuine "real-life" horror film.
Your post somehow seem "appropriate" for the Halloween/All Saints'/All Souls' weekend. Something featuring both [real]monsters and the dead.

At the same time, not all utopian schemes end up so horribly (or when they do, at least sometimes, at least some of them "recover" [albeit into something probably unrecognizable to the founders).

Witness the fate of groups like Oneida, Amana, and the Mormons in Utah.

Very true about some of the utopian communities surviving without serious aberrations or horrors. I guess I was generalizing because the ones we hear about in the media are always the nightmare groups, and often in spectacular ways. Then there are always groups like the community founded in Canada and led by Brother Twelve that died, but died by implosion rather than public explosion with horrors and all (well, there were some public court things and such, and the members were treated badly, but it was fairly civil in comparison to today's horrors). Thanks for the comment...
