A quick review

I watched Live Free or Die Hard last night. Despite the usual hard-to-believe aspects of technology and plot holes of fairly substantial dimension, it was a really enjoyable flick. A 'rollicking good yarn', as it were, and one for the 21st Century. For the testosterone-fueled crowd it has action almost from 5 minutes in that doesn't end until the credits.

Bruce Willis once again turned in a masterfully understated performance as Det. John McClane, the John Wayne-esque hero of the film, but a world-weary, cynical hero doing what needs to be done to keep Mom and apple pie safe from the villians. I think he's the shining star of the film, and I think that he's most often underrated as an actor. He can do drama, comedy, action, pretty much any genre, in a believable way that a lot of male actors of his generation (John Travolta, Sylvester Stallone, etc.) can't. And he does all of this with a grin and a wink. I really admire his work. The other star is immediately identifiable from ads for a major technology company. He turns in a believable role as most of the geek content for the film. Overall, a good film, as much as some people will dismiss it as a popcorn film. So what's wrong with simply enjoying a movie?
