A new book

Small Favor

There's a new book out by an author I've come to like quite a bit. I just picked it up Tuesday. This is, if you can believe it, the 10th in the series, though you probably haven't heard of him before. A lot of his books may have been straight to paperback, I think, with some of the hardcovers just coming out recently. They even have a series based on his books on the Space Channel (which isn't anywhere near as good as the books, imo), yet when I ask about his books in used book stores they say 'who?'. Not exactly a household name.

They're not books that most people would consider a believer should read. Lots of dark, evil stuff, demons and magic, vampires and werewolves, but they're an interesting mix of good vs. evil (which I think is what attracts me), good writing, and a series that hasn't become formulaic in the usual sense. They are well done, and a pleasant read.

Books are getting better, as far as price is concerned, in Canada. I bought this hardcover for about $10 less than it would have cost prior to the dollar going so high. It's about time. I boycotted buying hardcovers for a while there until they could get their act together and decide that they're not oil companies after all, so they couldn't just gouge people at will...

(For those who judge people by the books they read, I still read Dracula now and then. If you want a classic tale of good vs. evil, where good finally triumphs but is damaged and hurt in the process - hey! kind of like real life! - then this is the book to read.)
