Fortunes fluctuate for facial hair
For me it's more a matter of laziness and the fact that I cut my face to ribbons whenever I try to shave. It's a skill I've never mastered. (Does anyone remember Bill Cosby's piece on shaving? "All I wanted was a clean shave, not a self-sacrifice.")

My dear Dan and I have been together for 20 years now, blissfully living in sin. (I tell people that I have commitment issues). I have never seen him without a beard. He had a close trim once and it nearly sent me into shock. Granted, I was not the only one, he wore a suit to work that day and security made him sign into the building. He had worked there for 5 years.
Yes, SWMBO had never seen me without a beard until I had to have major surgery on my head and face in 2002. I had had the beard for about 25 years. I shaved just before the surgery (my head too!) and then she had to put up with this:
