It makes sense

Russian pilots have become more religious

First, just as a backlash of a hundred years of enforced atheism by the Communist government, then, well, if I were a military pilot I'd sure want to believe in something. It's a dangerous job! And now that they're free to believe and they have their own state religion it makes perfect sense.
